Leo Costa had been killed in a hit and run accident, and there was no doubt whose car was used. At first the man making the offers was nice, but now he was almost threatening. When Matt heard the name, he knew she had a problem. This guy was trouble. He had muscle to do his dirty work for him so his hands stayed clean, but he had a way of getting what he wanted. Her husband wouldn't make a deal, and now he was dead. He probably thought the widow would sell right away to get out from under the whole affair, but this widow wasn't cooperating. That could be bad news for her if Matt didn't help her.
This woman had been to the police, but they wouldn't help her. Could Matt? Would he be able to save her from the harassment? Save the nightclub? Find the person responsible for her husband's death?
By now (25 stories behind us) we should not be surprised at what Matt can do. But his sense of fair play - of doing the right thing - is still refreshing so grab a glass of tea, put your feet up, and enjoy this story. It is well worth the time it takes to read it.

This is a well written and accurately portrayed period P.I. story. There isn't any mystery to solve, not a lot of procedures to follow just a bunch of nice characterizations. It is an enjoyable short with the requisite gangsters, a hero P.I. pork pie hat with gat in hand and of course a dame.
Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good. The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.
